We crossed quite the whole island to reach Peel, where we had booked a B&B, the closest possible to the Castle: the Fernleigh, in Marine Parade.

The older buildings of Peel were built of reddish Peel Sandstone. The Fernleigh is the penultimate building to the left, and our room was on the third floor, facing the sea… and the Castle!

Besides the privileged view from the room and the lovely hosts, breakfast was outstanding, serving local delicacies such as cheese and jam… and fish. We had never before eaten fish on breakfast! These days we tried assorted ones, including the Kippers, that have been produced in Peel since at least the 19th century.

Peel Castle was a ten minutes walk from our B&B, but it was already closed this day. We could only visit it a few days later, because it was raining and we were waiting for a sunny day.

The Isle’s symbol is a triskelion composed of three armoured legs with golden spurs, upon a red background. It has been the official flag of Mann since 1 December 1932.

Although we’d not been able to visit the Castle on our first day in Mann, we walked around it all and were gifted with a wonderful golden sunset.

I will repost the entries 115 and 116, previously published here, all about Peel Castle. In case you want to see it at once, write Post 115 (or Post 116) in the Search.

VIew of DOuglas from the ferryboat
Douglas é a capital da Ilha. Aqui a cidade vista do ferryboat.

The ferryboat that would take us to Isle of Man
We made friends with the Port House hotel’s owner, a Brazilian called Munik. She drove us to Heysham Harbour to take the ferryboat.

O vento do mar é sempre frio.

We met this photographer who was working on a project about Number 1 Women – sports champions, company leaders, etc. ; we went down to the pub because it was cold despite the good weather. The sea breeze is always chilly.

Half an hour later, when we went back to the deck, the weather had changed radically. We seemed to be in the open sea, but inside a nebula. The world’s color was condensed into a palette of shades of gray. And, as the mist faded away, weird trees appeared, planted in the sea: eolian towers.

I had already seen such towers but never like this, sprouting from the sea. It was fascinating, so I stayed in the deck taking pictures until the edge of hypothermia.

Everytime I thought it was enough, something changed in the landscape. A sunbeam, a darker or lighter cloud, and it made such a difference that I decided to stay a bit longer, in spite of aching ears, running nose, frozen fingers.

Por fim o tempo abriu. O vento gelado carregou as nuvens.

Jovens se divertindo na pracinha / Teens having fun in the square

We resumed our walk to Morecambe Downtown just to find out that the so-called Carnival was a party for children. Teen popstars on the stage were making the kids’ day!

E a foto ficou engraçada.

To cool up after the walk, we bought ourselves a beer and found a place in the shadow to sit down and drink. That was when a guy offered to take our picture. We accepted happily… just to find out that his friend had squeezed himself into our photo. We burst into laughter, because we hadn’t even noticed that guy sitting beside us! He started a conversation, presenting himself as the responsible for the party sound, proudly showing us his company’s name printed on the stage, and offered us another beer. It was really funny… as was the picture!

Nossa caminhada / Our walk along Morecambe Bay

This post contains basically photos of a beautiful place I’m happy to have unexpectedly visited. We decided to go there because the taxi driver told us there was going to be a Carnival party, so we were curious to see what did a British Carnival look like, in May. In Brazil, this holiday takes place usually in February, sometimes first week of March. The weather was favorable: a bright sun had broken through the clouds, and made possible to take photos of the seaside stretch we covered on foot. I had doubts if these pictures would fit in a blog called Avalon, which purpose is to show Arthurian sites. Then I realized that, after all I’d been through, all my travelling, all the adventures, the whole United Kingdom had become Avalon for me.  A land where traces of the past await around each corner: monuments, stone circles, ancient graves and buildings; a land whose culture I admire so much, with a level of civilization that, as a Brazilian, I envy.

The only reason we were in Heysham was to take the ferryboat to the Isle of Man. We didn’t even know that this city existed! However it turned out to be a magnificent surprise! After lunch, on our way on Main Road to the shore, we found a sign indicating St. Peter’s Church, and decided to visit it. Unfortunately it was under repair, shrouded in scaffolds and plastic covers, so we couldn’t take photos. Inside the restricted area there’s also an ancient Anglo-Saxon cross. Only part of the graveyard was open to visitors. But beyond the beautiful ancient graves we’ve found a stairway, and a passage through ancient Roman ruins that led us to St. Patrick’s Chapel, by the sea, a stunning place!

Chegando na bucólica Heysham. / Arriving at bucolic Heysham

Deixamos as malas no hotel e seguimos no taxi.

Hunger, thirst + rain = pub time.

After visiting Lancaster Castle, we retrieved our suitcases and walked back to the train station. The ride to Heysham took us half an hour. From the station we took a taxi to the B&B The Port House and, on the way, the driver told us that there would be a “carnival” downtown. It was far to go on foot but he could drive us to town, from where we could walk by the shore to the party, that would be on the street. So we left the baggage and got in the car again.

No pub/ Inside the pub

Heysham is a large coastal village in Lancashire, England, overlooking Morecambe Bay. It is a ferry port, with services to the Isle of Man and Ireland, and the site of two nuclear power stations. O barman já nos olhava desconfiado. Acho que nunca tinha visto duas moças comendo e bebendo tanto. / The barman looked at us suspiciously. I guess he’d never seen two girls eat and drink so much.

Lancaster – Post 148

Vicky in the train from Manchester to Lancaster / Vicky no trem de Manchester para Lancaster

O trem que mais tarde nos levaria a Heysham / Train that would take us to Heysham later in the afternoon

After a restoring night of sleep, we left straight to be on our way. The subway was four blocks ahead, and our goal was the train station. We wanted to go to Heysham, from where departs a ferryboat to the Isle of Man. We needed to change trains at Lancaster and, as it was early, we had plenty of time to stroll around and visit the Castle.

Lancaster Castle

Vicky em frente ao castelo / Vicky in front of the Castle

There was a hotel on the way and, even not sure if we were going to stay for the night, the clerk was ready to keep our baggage. We really felt like staying: the town was lovely , and we had to buy pre-paid cards for our mobiles, among other minor errands. The clerk gave us a map with all directions. It was raining, so we ran to the Castle. The guided tour included in the admission was about to start, but we had time for a quick snack. We were starving, because last night’s hotel had no breakfast included.

Vista aérea do Castelo (reprodução) / Aerial view of the Castle (reproduction)

It is generally thought that Lancaster Castle was founded in the 1090s on the site of the Roman fort in a strategic location. It has belonged to many kings, including Richard the Lionheart. One of the functions the castle served was as a prison (first record of such use was in 1196), although the role became much more important after the English Civil War. Lancaster had been a prison from 1954 onwards. As the court and the gaols were so close, both contained within the castle walls, Lancaster was used for high-security trials. It was used as prison until March 2011, when began a large-scale refurbishment, so, unfortunately, much of its facade was hidden by  scaffolding the day we visited.

Stela e Vicky no pub do aeroporto de Amsterdã / The pub at Amsterdam Airport

May the first, 2015, at 4pm, Vicky and I happily boarded the TP74 TAP flight to Lisbon, where we would arrive the 2nd May at 5:40 am to take the connection at 7:20, flight TP342 to Manchester. Our destiny was the Isle of Man. We were so excited that we couldn’t sleep. We had no idea that at that very moment the pilots were starting a strike and our next flight had been cancelled before we set foot in Portuguese soil.

So, after passport control, we’ve been told to exit without reclaiming our baggage in the belt, because it would be taken care of by TAP, as we would be put in other flight(s) to our destination. We were given a 5 euros voucher each for breakfast. The ten euros added just enough for two cups of coffee and ONE disgusting pastry that we shared in the middle of the morning, starving and nervous because, as most passengers who had their connection flights cancelled, we stayed for hours in line at TAP desk to be forwarded. We were to board a KLM flight to Amsterdam, from where we would fly to Manchester, arriving there almost 12h after planned. But… we got these directions scribbled in a piece of paper, nothing like a boarding pass. Those should be retrieved at KLM desk. At that point, the mishap turned to misfortune, actually a nightmare, because we could only board that KLM flight if we had our luggage checked in with KLM. And TAP had kept it.

Talvez as preces tenham sido enfim ouvidas.

A tragicomic soap opera followed. After half an hour on line at TAP’s desk we were told to go to another one, where we were told to go back to the previous one, where the clerk promised us that TAP would forward our baggage. We spent hours going to and fro, explaining to a dozen different clerks that KLM would only check us in with our suitcases, because they would not take responsibility over them, since they were in TAP’s premises.
At that point we were desperate. There were journalists from the Portuguese newspapers interviewing people about the nuisance caused by the strike. I had tears in my eyes when they came to us. I reported that TAP wouldn’t release our baggage, alleging that it “wasn’t possible” and that they would eventually send them to us. They apparently couldn’t understand that we were on the move, therefore the baggage would never reach us. The cameraman asked what we were going to do. The answer was: pray.

And maybe our prayers were heard. Or it was because we asked for a manager and just sit down in front of TAP’s check in to wait for him, spreading our hand baggage on the floor: a manager showed up! We reported our trouble for the hundredth time. The guy wanted to send us back where we’d already unsuccessfully been to, so we were adamant to just stay where we were until he had the issue taken care of. So, less than one hour to the KLM boarding call, this blessed citizen took us to a storeroom by the belts, where we’d had access denied before. We could not believe when someone entered this room, stuffed to the roof with suitcases… and came back bringing ours.

Sleepless since the eve, we gathered our strength to crawl to KLM desk, dragging the baggage behind us and check in, boarding immediately. That was a restoring flight! A good snack was served and we had time, before the connecting flight, to find a Pub at Amsterdam Airport, where TV news showed the birth of Princess Charlotte, from the British Royal Family. We had a couple of pints to celebrate it. We arrived in Manchester late at night, under rain, and the only available transport was a (expensive) taxi, which we took because there was no option. I gave the driver The Crown and Anchor’s address. We had booked a room through booking.com, but it just didn’t show up at the system! And there was no room available there, neither in the nearby hotels or B&Bs. They were all crowded, due to a soccer game the next day, the English league final or something like it. We were about to beg her to let us sleep on the floor after the pub closed, when the manager remembered there was a small back room they never rented because its door had a broken lock and wouldn’t close. That was the salvation! There we stayed and even had a good shower. But before that we still got a soup at the Pub and a few pints to celebrate the happy ending. Our suitcases kept the door perfectly closed until next morning.
