The Long Man of Wilmington ( South Downs, Sussex), also called The Green Man / Também conhecido como “Homem Verde”
Além dos lugares Arthurianos eu queria ver as “chalk figures” do Reino Unido. São enormes figuras que parecem desenhadas nas colinas com caneta branca, pois as linhas são escavadas revelando o subsolo de giz. Existem várias representando cavalos e duas figuras humanas, o Long Man de Wilmington e o gigante de Cerne Abbas, ambas de origens pré-históricas com evidente caráter cerimonial pagão. Wilmington fica perto de Brighton, nem duas horas distante de Londres, então resolvi começar pelo Long Man. Seria também uma peregrinação rock’n’roll, pois a cidade foi palco do filme Quadrophenia do The Who, um marco na minha vida.
Besides the Arthurian sites, UK has a number of chalk figures I wanted to visit. They look like massive drawings made with white pen in the hills, because the outline is carved revealing the chalk underground. There are some horses and two humans, the Long Man of Wilmington and the Cerne abbas Giant, both ancient Pagan sites of worship. Wilmington was not far from Brighton, less than two hours from London, so I decided to see the Long Man first of all. It would be a rock’n’roll pilgrimage as well, because Brighton was the stage of Quadrophenia by The Who, an opera that marked my life.

De Brighton a Polegate, estação mais próxima de Wilmington, o trem levou dez a quinze minutos. Da janela se vê a figura ao longe. Ficou evidente que eu levaria o dia todo para ir e voltar a pé. Nesse momento, um táxi parou na minha frente e os passageiros desceram. Entrei imediatamente e o Sr. Angus me levou a Wilmington, por quinze libras ida e volta. Aceitei, pois ir andando implicaria em pernoitar ali, sairia muito mais caro. Wilmington é uma belezinha no meio do nada, duas ou três ruas de casas com telhados de turfa tão antigas, que algumas são tortas.
From Brighton to Polegate the train takes ten to fifteen minutes. Polegate was as near as I would get to Wilmington. You can see the chalk figure from the window. Clearly it would take me the whole day to walk there and return. So when a taxi suddenly stopped right in front of me to drop off passengers, I dropped in and Mr. Angus charged me 15 pounds to take me to the long Man and return. I accepted, otherwise I’d have to stay for the night, much more expensive. Wilmington is a lovely tiny village in the middle of nowhere. Some houses are so old they’re crooked.

Pensei em convidar o Sr. Angus para uma pint, mas tinha o tempo justo de retornar e pegar o trem para Brighton. Porém ao chegar na estação me posicionei do lado errado e quando vi que o trem is chegar nem lembrei de usar a passarela, tentei atravessar a ferrovia pelos trilhos. O guarda da estação começou a gritar, armado e furioso, por isso precisei voltar e perdi o trem, tive de esperar por quase uma hora até passar o seguinte.
I considered inviting Mr. Angus for a pint, but time was short to take the train to Brighton. Back in Polegate Station I placed myself the wrong side of the platform, and when I realized that, the train was about to arrive. I forgot to use the footbridge and tried to cross the railway. A policeman started to scream aloud, he was armed and furious, so I had to trace back my steps and lost my train, and the next hour until another one arrived.

Em Brighton, tirei fotos o quanto pude até anoitecer. Desta vez, tinha uma câmera de 12 megapixels e três cartões de memória de 4GB cada, para não ter de apagar nenhuma imagem. / I strolled around taking pictures until sunset. This time I had a 12 MP camera and three memory cards of 4 GB each, so no picture would be lost.

O beco estava cheio de lixo e trancada a porta de acesso ao exato lugar onde a transa rolou. / The place was full of trash. The door to the exact place where the couple had sex was locked.
Os proprietários não deviam mais aguentar ver pessoas ali imitando o filme. / The owners probably were fed up with people there mimicking the movie.
Tive a sorte de encontrei um irlandês fotografando a mesma coisa. Tiramos foto um do outro, que encontro fortuito! / I was so lucky as to meet an Irishman taking the same photographs. So we portrayed each other on the spot. What a fortuitous meeting!
