Vindolanda impressiona bem menos que os fortes que visitei antes, mas é importantíssimo por causa do material ali encontrado: as placas de Vindolanda, registros escritos que lançaram luz sobre a vida na Muralha de Adriano.
The Vindolanda Tablets, British Museum
Vindolanda is far less impressive than the former Roman forts I’d visited, but it’s too important due to stuff found in the site: the Vindolanda tablets, written records that enlightened the archaeologic community about life on Hadrian’s Wall.

São os documentos manuscritos mais antigos da Grã Bretanha. Finas placas de madeira, do tamanho de um cartão postal, escritas com tinta à base de carbono, dos séculos I e II DC. Embora registros semelhantes sobre papiro sejam comuns em todo o Império Romano, placas de madeira escritas com tinta só foram encontradas em 1973, ali no sítio do Forte Romano de Vindolanda, pelo arqueólogo Robin Birley.

They’re the oldest surviving handwritten documents in Britain. Written on fragments of thin, post-card sized wooden tablets with carbon-based ink, the tablets date to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Although similar records on papyrus were known from elsewhere in the Roman Empire, wooden tablets with ink text had not been recovered until 1973, when archaeologist Robin Birley discovered these artefacts at the site of the Roman fort in Vindolanda.
Há registros de assuntos oficiais militares e mensagens pessoais para membros da guarnição em Vindolanda, suas famílias e escravos. Destaca-se um convite para uma festa de aniversário, talvez o mais antigo escrito em Latim por uma mulher. Os textos de 72 placas já foram traduzidos, transcritos e publicados em 2010. Encontram-se atualmente no British Museum, enquanto mais placas tem sido encontradas no sítio arqueológico.

The documents record official military matters as well as personal messages to and from members of the garrison of Vindolanda, their families, and their slaves. Highlights of the tablets include an invitation to a birthday party, which is perhaps the oldest surviving document written in Latin by a woman. Held at the British Museum, the texts of 752 tablets have been transcribed, translated and published as of 2010. Tablets continue to be found at Vindolanda.

Desde 1970, voluntários participam das escavações. Cerca de 5750 pessoas já passaram por ali, aceitos pelo período mínimo de duas semanas e máximo de quatro em cada temporada. Para ser voluntário é precise ter 16 anos ou mais, boa saúde e forma física. Não se exige experiência anterior, pois todos os voluntários são supervisionados e orientados na realização de suas tarefas. É cobrada uma taxa de 100 libras por período, mais 25 para tornar-se membro dos “Amigos de Vindolanda”. Os voluntários recebem a camiseta da temporada e são acomodados no Centro Hedley com pensão completa, sendo cobradas mais 600 libras pelos 12 dias. Toda comida servida é fresca, incluindo opções vegetarianas.

People of all ages, from all over the world meet in Vindolanda.
The Vindolanda Trust has been accepting volunteers on to its excavations since its foundation in 1970 and over 5750 people have participated for the minimum of one period of two consecutive weeks, maximum of two periods (4 weeks) in the season. Applicants must be over the age of 16, in good health and personal fitness. No previous archaeological experience is needed, as each volunteer will be supervised and guided in the best techniques possible to do the task required of them. There is a standard excavation fee of £100 per two week period, plus £25 for an individual membership to the ‘Friends of Vindolanda’. Volunteers are given the season’s T-shirt. Accommodation at the Hedley Centre is provided on a full board basis, and will cost you more £600 per period per person (12 days). All food is freshly cooked and vegetarian options will always be offered.

Anne, uma das voluntárias com quem conversei, disse que vai todo ano nas férias, há quatro anos. Segundo ela, este é um dos sítios mais bem preservados de todo Império Romano e participar de uma escavação arqueológica é uma experiência única, especialmente quando artefatos como cerâmica, jóias e estátuas são encontrados. Nos demais sítios, apenas universitários são aceitos como voluntários.

Anne, one of the volunteers with whom I had a conversation, told me that she’s been participating for four years, every holiday break. According to her, this is one of the best preserved sites in the Roman Empire and it’s a thrilling experience to be in an excavation, specially when artifacts such as pottery, jewelry and statuary are unearthened. At many other archaeological sites, this opportunity is only available to university students.

One of the writing tablets records a squad sent to build or repair this Bath house around AD100. The garrison was the 9th Cohort of Batavians, a thousand men strong.
