O primeiro santuário no local das fontes de água quente foi construído pelos Celtas. A água que brota do solo em Bath caiu sob forma de chuva nas colinas Mendip próximas. Ela se infiltra através de aquíferos de calcário a uma profundidade entre 2.700 e 4.300 metros, onde energia geotermal eleva a temperatura da água para algo entre 64 e 96ºC. Sob pressão, a água aquecida sobe à superfície através de fissuras e falhas no calcário.
The first shrine at the site of the hot springs was built by Celts. The water which bubbles up from the ground at Bath falls as rain on the nearby Mendip Hills. It percolates down through limestone aquifers to a depth of between 2,700 and 4,300 metres (8,900 and 14,100 ft) where geothermal energy raises the water temperature to between 64 and 96 °C (147.2 and 204.8 °F). Under pressure, the heated water rises to the surface along fissures and faults in the limestone.

Os Banhos Romanos originais se localizam abaixo do nível da rua. Há quatro atrações: a Fonte Sagrada, o Templo Romano, a casa de banhos romana e o Museu. Toda construção acima do nível da rua data do século XIX. / The Roman Baths themselves are below the modern street level. There are four main features: the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman Bath House and the Museum holding finds from Roman Bath. The buildings above street level date from the 19th century.
