Uther Pendragon, o pai de Arthur, era sobrinho e sucessor natural de Aurelianus Ambrosius, um nobre ou general romano, ou as duas coisas. Há quem diga que são a mesma pessoa. Cada autor interpreta de uma maneira, pois os relatos históricos que restaram desse período são poucos e diferem entre si. O que é certo é que, a partir do século I, o Império Romano se estendeu até a ilha que é hoje a Grã Bretanha. Construíram estradas, fortificações, muralhas, habitações. Quatro séculos depois, Roma chamou as tropas de volta para engrossar fileiras em outros fronts, mas esse povo se miscigenara, deixando sua marca na cultura local, como provam inúmeros sítios arqueológicos.
Uther nasceu em solo britânico e era reconhecido como líder pelos guerreiros selvagens e temidos das tribos locais. Seu carisma e habilidade em combate são características destacadas em todas as narrativas.
A Inglaterra não era um país; a ilha se dividia em vários reinos e havia desavença entre os nobres, pois todos queriam se tornar Rei. A coroação de Uther foi bastante conturbada, e nem todos ficaram satifeitos, a começar pelo Duque de Gorlois, senhor de Tintagel, na Cornualha. Mas este foi morto em batalha enquanto Uther tomava seu lugar na cama de Igraine.
Logo que nasceu, Arthur foi levado pelo Mago Merlin para ser criado por Sir Hector, senhor de um reino distante. Foi o preço que Merlin cobrou pelo feitiço de disfarce: a criança que nasceria daquele encontro. Ele quis afastar o herdeiro da corte, onde sua vida sempre estaria em risco. Além disso, era costume entre os nobres da época enviar seus filhos, especialmente os bastardos, para serem criados nas propriedades de outros senhores, onde aprenderiam a montar e manejar armas para se tornarem cavaleiros na idade apropriada.
Uther Pendragon, Arthur’s father, was the nephew and natural heir of Aurelianus Ambrosius, a roman noble or general, or both. Some say Uther and Ambrosius were the same person. Each author has his own interpretation, because the registers of this age are few and tell different tales. What is certain is that in the 1st century the Roman Empire, in expansion, invaded the island which today is Great Britain. The Romans built roads, houses, forts, walls. Four centuries later, the troops were called back to fight in other fronts, but people had miscigenated, leaving a legacy in local culture, as proved by innumerable archeological sites.
Uther was born in Britain and recognized as a leader by the fearsome savage warriors of native tribes. His charisma and brilliance in battle are remarked in all tales.
England was not yet a country. The island was split in many kingdoms and there was quarrels among the lords, particularly because all wanted to be the King. Uther’s coronation was turmoiled and not everyone left satisfied, specially the Duke of Gorlois, lord of Tintagel in Cornwall. But he was killed in battle while Uther was taking his place in Igraine’s bed.
As soon as he was born, Arthur was taken by Merlin the Magician to a distant realm, to be raised by its lord, Sir Hector. Merlin has asked Uther, as a price for the spell, for the child that would be conceived that night. The Magician wanted to keep Arthur unknown and away from the court, where the heir’s life would always be in danger. Anyway, nobles used to send their children – specially bastards – to be raised by friend lords, in whose household they would learn riding horses and managing weapons to become knights in due time.
