Para ir de Cardiff a Caerleon, era preciso pegar dois transportes, com baldeação em Newport. São aproximadamente 30 km. Fui de ônibus para economizar 4 míseras libras.
To reach Caerleon from Cardiff you need two transports, changing in Newport. Distance is around 18 miles. I’ve chosen the bus, to save four miserable pounds.
O nome romano Isca significa “água”, referindo-se ao Rio Usk, em cujas margens fica Caerleon / The name Isca means “water” and refers to the river Usk, on which banks is located Caerleon.
Caerleon é um importante sítio arqueológico, onde estão preservadíssimos os vestígios de Isca Augusta, antiga fortaleza romana que abrigava a Legio Secunda Augusta. “Augusta” significa “de Augusto”. Muitas legiões romanas recebiam o nome de seu general. O nome Caerleon, que surgiu mais tarde, derivou de “fortaleza da Legião” em galês.
Caerleon is a site of archaeological importance, being the location of Isca Augusta, a notable Roman legionary fortress, headquarters of the Legion “II Augusta” which remains are very well preserved. “Augusta” means “Augusto’s”. Many Roman legions undertook their general’s name. The later name Caerleon may derive from the Welsh for “fortress of the legion”.

As escavações revelaram um anfiteatro praticamente intacto, as termas (casa de banhos) e os alojamentos dos legionários. O ônibus para em frente ao Museu dos Banhos Romanos, que abriga as antigas termas.
Excavations unearthed a practically intact military amphitheatre, thermae (baths) and barracks occupied by the Roman Legion. The bus stop is right in front of the Roman Baths Museum, where are the ancient thermae.

O museu é estruturado em passarelas em torno das ruínas da casa de banhos romana. / The museum structure consists in walkways over the remains of the military bath house.
Isca foi uma das três únicas fortalezas legionárias permanentes na Britannia romana. Foi o ponto mais distante a oeste a que chegou o Império Romano na ilha. / Isca was one of only three permanent legionary fortresses in Roman Britain. It was the farthest point west in Britain that the Roman Empire extended to.

Praticamente ao lado fica o Museu Nacional da Legião Romana e a Igreja de St. Cadoc. A visitação é gratuita nos dois museus.
Almost beside this museum there’s another one: The National Roman Legion Museum. Both are free. St. Cadoc’s Church lies ahead.
