Após uma restauradora noite de sono, saímos direto para prosseguir a jornada. A estação de metrô ficava a quatro quarteirões, e nosso objetivo era a estação de trem. Iríamos até Heysham, de onde saía o ferryboat para a Ilha de Man. Era preciso trocar de trem em Lancaster, e como era cedo, tínhamos tempo para andar um pouco pela cidade e visitar o Castelo.

After a restoring night of sleep, we left straight to be on our way. The subway was four blocks ahead, and our goal was the train station. We wanted to go to Heysham, from where departs a ferryboat to the Isle of Man. We needed to change trains at Lancaster and, as it was early, we had plenty of time to stroll around and visit the Castle.

Lancaster Castle

No meio do caminho havia um hotel e, mesmo sem saber se iríamos pernoitar ali, o recepcionista se prontificou a guardar nossa bagagem. Deu mesmo vontade de ficar! A cidade era bem bonitinha, e tínhamos que comprar chips pré-pagos para os celulares, entre outras miudezas. O mesmo rapaz nos deu um mapinha com todas as direções. Chovia, e corremos para o Castelo. Em poucos minutos saía uma visita guiada incluída no ingresso, e tivemos tempo para fazer um lanchinho. Estávamos famintas, pois nosso pernoite não incluía café da manhã.

There was a hotel on the way and, even not sure if we were going to stay for the night, the clerk was ready to keep our baggage. We really felt like staying: the town was lovely , and we had to buy pre-paid cards for our mobiles, among other minor errands. The clerk gave us a map with all directions. It was raining, so we ran to the Castle. The guided tour included in the admission was about to start, but we had time for a quick snack. We were starving, because last night’s hotel had no breakfast included.

Acredita-se-se que o Castelo de Lancaster foi construído em 1090, num ponto estratégico antes ocupado por uma fortificação romana. Pertenceu a diversos reis inclusive Ricardo Coração de Leão. O Castelo também serviu como prisão (o primeiro registro que se tem disso data de 1196), e essa função se intensificou após a Guerra Civil Inglesa. Lancaster voltou a servir como prisão a partir de 1954. Como a Corte e a Prisão ficavam próximas, dentro das muralhas do Castelo, ali eram realizados os julgamentos de segurança máxima. O Castelo serviu como prisão até 2011, quando começaram trabalhos de restauração, por isso, infelizmente, no dia de nossa visita muito da fachada estava escondida pelos andaimes.

It is generally thought that Lancaster Castle was founded in the 1090s on the site of the Roman fort in a strategic location. It has belonged to many kings, including Richard the Lionheart. One of the functions the castle served was as a prison (first record of such use was in 1196), although the role became much more important after the English Civil War. Lancaster had been a prison from 1954 onwards. As the court and the gaols were so close, both contained within the castle walls, Lancaster was used for high-security trials. It was used as prison until March 2011, when began a large-scale refurbishment, so, unfortunately, much of its facade was hidden by  scaffolding the day we visited.
