Cerne Abbas Giant

Meu próximo destino era Cerne Abbas. O ônibus até lá sai de Dorchester. Quis conhecer este lugar por ser mais uma figura esculpida em montanhas, como o Cavalo de Uffington. O gigante de Cerne Abbas Giant é uma figura humana, como o Long Man of Wilmington – só que ostenta uma clava na mão e um enorme pênis ereto. Ninguém sabe quem fez ou há quantos séculos está ali, alguns estudiosos dizem até que não é muito antigo, mas o mistério permanece. Até hoje casais que desejam filhos vão à noite deitar-se naquele lugar, por que o pênis do gigante é um símbolo de fertilidade.

My next stop was Cerne Abbas. To get there I took a bus from Dorchester. My interest was to see one more chalk figure, after the Uffington White Horse. The Cerne Abbas Giant is a human figure, like the Long Man of Wilmington , but he holds a club in one hand and shows a big hard cock. It’s not known who made it or when, it’s been there for centuries, though some researchers say it’s not that ancient. It’s a mistery anyway. To this day, couples who want babies go spend the night up there, as a ritual, because his big cock is a fertility symbol.

No livro The Druid’s Way, (O Caminho do Druida) o autor Phillip Carr-Gomm associa as duas figuras ( o Gigante e o Long man) pela relativa proximidade geográfica e pela hipótese de tratar-se de um casal.

In the book The Druid’s Way, the author Phillip Carr-Gomm associates both figures (the Giant and the Long Man) not only for being kind of geografically close   but also because they could be a couple!

Havia dois B&B em Cerne Abbas; escolhi o mais barato. A diferença era de cinco libras, aproveitei para tomar um Cornish Cream Tea. Havia uma casa de chá em frente ao ponto do ônibus, e estava cheia, por isso achei que seria boa. Não fiquei decepcionada. Os brioches, o creme e a geleia eram de produção caseira, uma delícia.

There were two B&Bs in Cerne Abbas, so I’ve chosen the cheapest, saving 5 pounds for a Cornish Cream Tea. There was a Tea Room in front of the bus stop, and it was full, so I believed it would be good, and was not disappointed. The scones, the clotted cream and the jam were house made, yummy delicacies.

O vilarejo é composto por duas igrejas, o lindo cemitério, uma fonte, o pub, casas pitorescas e o gigante. Andei por tudo e bati muitas fotos, mas armazenei num CD (aliás mais de um para garantir) como se fazia em 2010. Mais tarde, copiei tudo no meu iPhoto. Agora meu computador não tem mais nem entrada para CD; o leitor externo parece ter caído na incompatibilidade e o novo álbum de fotos da Apple, o Photos, não lê mais o iPhoto de 2010. Felizmente eu tinha copiado as fotos principais num HD externo. Assim que conseguir abrir as demais, acrescentarei aqui.

Cerne Abbas has two churches, the beautiful graveyard, a spring, the pub, a few shops, scenic cottages and the Giant. I strolled around it all and took a lot of pictures, but kept them all in a CD (actually a couple of them, to be on the safe side) as people did in 2010. Later it was all transfered to my iPhoto. Now, computers don’t have CD input; my external reader suddenly lost compatibility and the software Photos doesn’t read iPhoto 2010 files anymore. Fortunately I had copied the most important pics in another folder, in an external HD. So, as soon as I can open the others, I will post them here.
